A Journey of Creative Discovery
My academic journey at Boise State University has been an enriching and transformative experience. Throughout my MFA program, I explored my passion for metalsmithing, visual arts, and social practice, delving deep into the intersection of creativity and activism. The MFA thesis represents not just a capstone to my academic career but a personal exploration of the relationship between the beauty industry to humans and non-human animals, as well as a reflection on pressing social issues like consumerism, feminism, and sustainability.
My time at Boise State has allowed me to refine my artistic voice, connect with my community, and foster a deeper understanding of how art can be a tool for change.
The Award and Its Significance
The Boise State University Distinguished Master's Thesis/Capstone Project Award is given annually to a graduate student whose project demonstrates excellence in research, creativity, and innovation. The selection process is highly competitive, with criteria that evaluate both academic rigor and the project's broader impact. I am honored to have been chosen for this award, which recognizes the potential of my work to make a difference in the field of visual arts and beyond. My thesis has also been nominated for the Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS) Distinguished Thesis Award, a nomination that extends the recognition of my work to a broader academic community.
A Glimpse Into My Thesis
My thesis project investigates the complex relationships between humans and animals through the lens of metalsmithing and installation art. By exploring themes such as animal rights, beauty standards, and the ethical challenges of consumer culture, I sought to provoke reflection and dialogue. Using installation, metalsmithing, and audience participation, my project highlighted the often-overlooked consequences of corporate behaviors on women and non-human animals.
The methodology involved a combination of studio-based practice, research, and community engagement. Key findings from this work revealed the power of art in raising awareness and fostering empathy, encouraging viewers to question societal norms around consumption and exploitation. The project has already sparked conversations within the academic community, and I hope it will continue to inspire further discussion and action.
Reflecting on the Research Process
Looking back, the research and creation process was as challenging as it was rewarding. One of the most significant challenges was balancing the research depth with the work's creative aspects. However, each obstacle presented an opportunity to grow as an artist and researcher. I am incredibly grateful to my mentors, colleagues, and the Boise State faculty for their guidance and support throughout this journey. Their encouragement, along with the resources provided by the university, enabled me to push the boundaries of my work and take creative risks that ultimately paid off.
Looking to the Future
Winning this award is an incredible honor, opening up exciting new possibilities for the future. It strengthens my commitment to continue exploring the intersections of art and activism, with the goal of making a positive impact on the world around me. This recognition will serve as a springboard for future projects and collaborations that challenge and engage audiences in meaningful ways.
As I move forward, I am eager to expand on the themes explored in my thesis, deepen my engagement with the art community, and contribute to the ongoing conversation about sustainability, animal rights, and social justice within the arts. I hope to leverage this achievement in my career development, exploring opportunities for exhibitions, residencies, and further research that will allow me to continue growing as an artist.
A Heartfelt Thank You
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Boise State University, my mentors, and everyone who has supported me throughout my academic journey. This award would not have been possible without the encouragement and inspiration of the people around me.
