Battery
Chicken wire, pine shavings, ceramic seed egg.
2022
Battery is a piece consisting of two chicken wire cages. The first cage correlates to the size of a battery cage, which serves as a home for egg-laying hens in factory farms. Inside the cage lies a ceramic egg, which draws attention to the idea that the chicken is born within this construct and will live the duration of its life within those constraints. The battery cage is next to a larger enclosure, sized to the proportions of an average American adult female. The two cages shed light on how small these spaces are for human and non-human bodies. In this work, I am asking viewers to empathize and think differently about factory farming and the treatment of animals.
